Fall Prevention

We understand the critical importance of preventing falls, especially for individuals who have experienced a brain injury. Falls can pose significant risks to both physical and cognitive health, and our goal is to provide you with valuable information and resources to enhance safety and well-being.

Why Falls Prevention Matters:

Falls are the leading cause of brain injury in Ohio. By focusing on prevention strategies, we aim to empower individuals and their caregivers to create environments that prioritize safety.

Tips for Falls Prevention:

  1. Home Safety Assessments: Conduct a thorough assessment of your living space to identify and address potential hazards. Ensure that pathways are clear, remove tripping hazards, and install proper lighting to enhance visibility.

  2. Physical Activity and Strength Training: Engage in regular physical activity to enhance strength, balance, and coordination. Consult with healthcare professionals to create a personalized exercise plan that aligns with your abilities and goals.

  3. Medication Management: Work closely with healthcare providers to review and manage medications. Some medications may have side effects that affect balance and cognitive function, so it's essential to stay informed and make adjustments when necessary.

  4. Footwear Matters: Wear supportive and well-fitting footwear to minimize the risk of slips and falls. Avoid walking in socks or shoes with slippery soles, especially on smooth surfaces.

  5. Assistive Devices: Utilize assistive devices such as canes, walkers, or handrails for added stability. Ensure that these devices are properly fitted and well-maintained.

  6. Regular Vision Check-ups: Schedule regular eye exams to address any vision impairments. Good vision is crucial for navigating the environment safely.

  7. Stay Hydrated and Nourished: Maintain a well-balanced diet and stay hydrated. Proper nutrition contributes to overall health and can positively impact physical and cognitive function.

PUT A LID ON IT COALITION

Bike helmets save lives and prevent injuries – in fact, in 2017, the number of people injured by not wearing a bike helmet was 51,000, enough people to fill Nationwide Arena in Columbus 2½ times! While Ohio currently has no statewide mandate on helmet usage, the National Transportation Safety Board is recommending all states enact laws requiring bicyclists to wear helmets to stem an increase in bicycle deaths on U.S. roadways. Through raising awareness, providing needed resources and education we can help prevent injuries, save lives and much more!

  • In Ohio, estimates indicate that just 10-20% of children wear bike helmets

  • 75% of bike-related fatalities would be prevented with a helmet

  • Helmet use can reduce the risk of head injury by 85% and severe brain injury by 88%

  • Apart from the automobile, bicycles are tied to more childhood injuries than any other consumer product, including trampolines, ladders, and swimming pools

  • A $10 bike helmet saves the healthcare system $41 per child

  • If 85% of the children injured in the U.S. wore helmets, we could save up to $256 million in just one year.

Brain Injury Association is honored to partner with the Ohio Put a Lid On It Coalition to help provide resources and education to protect Ohio’s children from sustaining a brain injury.
